Montreal, a smart and very affordable UN city

A city of United Nations

During his recent visit to Montreal, Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary General praises Montreal as an international city, an UN city.
Montreal is one of the eight cities where a specialized UN agency is located. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is in Montreal since it was founded more than 50 years ago. But Montreal also hosts other head offices of international organizations related to the United Nations, such as the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, the Multilateral Fund of the Montreal Protocol and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Montreal is without doubt the UN city of Canada, the UN city of the world.

Most affordable and best city

While Vancouver is the world's most unaffordable housing market just behind Hong Kong, Montreal is ranked second most affordable city for the 15-29 years old in the world by the YouthfulCities Affordability Index, an annual world-spanning analysis of the largest metropolises and their respective affordability for individuals aged 15 to 29 enacted by a Toronto-based startup. The index uses minimum wage to assess how many hours it took to purchase daily products like a carton of eggs, a tube of toothpaste, gym memberships, taxi prices, the cost of movie tickets, and rent.
Athough sometimes it feels like -40oC, according to The Economist, Montreal is the second best city in the world to live in, topping Paris, Genève, Londres, Sydney, Stockholm, Amsterdam, and San Francisco. And the infrastructure of Montreal is the safest sixth in the world. In term of quality of life and economic and tax conditions for families of the upper middle class, the Quebec's metropolis ranks 10th worldwilde. The research of The Economist took into account security of people, infrastructure, and computer networks, taxation, business environment and level of democracy.
Buying a house in Vancouver or in Toronto is almost scaring and untouchable. Montreal is cheapest big city with international reach and features to buy a house. Torontonians make more money but their cost of living is also significantly higher in the 416. The cost of real estate in Toronto is almost 100% more expensive than in Montreal. Vancouver is worse: it is actually the world's second most unaffordable housing market! Even small cities like Ottawa, Calgary, Sakastoon are more expensive than Montreal to buy a house.

Best city for students

Montreal has long been considered a hub for local and international students. The 2015-16 QS World University Rankings have proved it. Montreal is the best city in Canada to be a student, coming in an overall eighth on an international list.

Top 7 smart cities

The Intelligent Community Forum just names the Greater Montreal one of the seven smartiest community in the world. The New York-based think tank assesses the city's wired and wireless broadband infrastrure, new techonologies to make services more effcient, collaborative system among businesses, institutions and citizens. A smart city is a city that uses new technologies and innovation ideas, often created by citizens and supported by the city governments to make a positive difference in people’s lives and communities.

The happiness is in the poutine

Montreal is well known for its large number of French and Italian fine restaurants and many other cuisine. Actually Montreal restaurant Toqué is the only Canadian restaurant to crack the list of world's top 100, and it is ranked best restaurant on Canada's 100 best. But Montreal also offers large choice of poutine, Canada's popular fast-food dish originated in Quebec. Many restaurants add their own twist on it, such as the poutine with foie gras by Au Pied de Cochon.
Montreal is not only Canada’s cultural capital, but also one of the world’s most liveable cities. The happiness comes probably from the plate of poutine!
